Charlottesville, White Supremacy and Kids With Disabilities #Enough Already

Earlier this year we ran a post asking whether special education was in trouble ? Perhaps this week it would be better to ask- Is America in trouble? White supremacists and nazis marched on Charlottesville, Virginia last weekend. They carried lit torches and screamed at and terrorized local people. They murdered one counter-protester and two state troopers also died as a result of the event.  Nineteen other innocent people suffered injuries as a result of the Alt-right riot. The new and apparently emboldened white supremacists no longer feel that it is necessary to cover their faces with hoods . The accounts are disgusting and difficult to read. ADA is 27 Years Old On July 26 #ADA

On July 26,  1990, President George H.W. Bush signed into law the Americans with Disabilities Act, which prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in employment, transportation, public accommodations, commercial facilities, telecommunications, and state and local government services.Today marks the 27th anniversary of this groundbreaking law. To celebrate the birthday of ADA, here are some fun facts from our friends at the U S Census Bureau: Population Distribution 56.7 million The number of people in the United States with a disability in 2010, representing 19.0 percent of the civilian noninstitutionalized population. People with a disability have a physical or mental impairment that affects one or more major life activities, such as walking, bathing, dressing, eating, preparing meals, doing errands alone or doing housework.
